Uruguay coach Fossati in hospital with chest pains [Thu Aug 25th, 2005]

Montevideo (Reuters) - Uruguay coach Jorge Fossati has been admitted into hospital after suffering with chest pains, local media reported.

Doctors ordered the 52-year-old former goalkeeper to be subjected to a battery of tests because he was a smoker and his job as national team coach was considered highly stressful, reports said.

He was due to be discharged on Thursday.

Fossati took over the South American side last year and has helped them regain credibility after a string of dismal results.

However, the two-time world champions are still struggling to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, lying seventh in the 10-nation group with 18 points from 15 games.

The top four teams qualify directly for Germany and the fifth play off against either the Solomon Islands or Australia for another place.

Uruguay, who have three games left, have a key match at home to Colombia on September 4. Colombia currently occupy fifth spot with 20 points.
