Belgian clubs seek financial boost from UEFA Champions League [Thu Aug 25th, 2005]
Brussels (Reuters) - Anderlecht coach Franky Vercauteren says his team "have nothing to lose" after being drawn against holders Liverpool, English champions Chelsea and Real Betis in the UEFA Champions League.
Both of Belgium's Champions League representatives received a dream draw in financial terms, but they face an uphill battle to qualify from their respective groups.
Club Bruges, who defeated Norway's Valerenga on penalties to qualify, will host Italian champions Juventus in their opening Group A game and then face German champions Bayern Munich, while they will hope to salvage something from their encounters with Austrian side Rapid Vienna.
Vercauteren's side head for Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in their Group G opener.
"This is a heavy group," was the reaction of the Brussels-based coach.
"We must also be careful not to underestimate Betis. I think that even third place will be difficult. Beginning with Chelsea is really hard, but we have nothing to lose."
Bruges captain Gert Verheyen says his team "must beat Vienna" if they are to have any chance.
"The other two teams are better than us. But if we can win our games against Vienna and get a couple of good results at home against the others then you never know what might happen," Verheyen said.
For the Belgians the Champions League is very much a question of success off the field rather than expected glory on it.
