UEFA Champions League: Klasnic double helps Bremen through against Basel [Thu Aug 25th, 2005]

Frankfurt (Reuters) - Werder Bremen missed a penalty and had a striker sent off before beating Switzerland's Basel 3-0 to seal a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage 4-2 on aggregate.

The Bundesliga side, trailing 2-1 from the first leg, missed the chance to move ahead in the return at the Weserstadion when Johan Micoud slipped a penalty hopelessly wide at the end of the first half.

Bremen continued to ride their luck, David Degen and Matias Delgado both going close to increasing Basel's advantage early in the second half.

Striker Ivan Klasnic finally put Bremen in the driving seat when he tapped in Miroslav Klose's through-ball in the 64th minute.

Tim Borowski showed Micoud how to score a penalty three minutes later, following a foul on Micoud, and Klasnic grabbed his second with a low drive from 20 metres in the 72nd minute.

Klose was sent off for a second booking with 11 minutes remaining, but Bremen held on comfortably.
