US Open Cup: Chicago Fire 1, Rochester 1 (Chicago win 5-4 on penalties) [Thu Aug 25th, 2005]

Rochester, New York (AP) -- Chris Armas assisted on Chicago's goal in regulation and scored the game-winning spot-kick, leading the Fire past the Rochester Raging Rhinos 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 deadlock in a US Open Cup quarter-final match.

Armas sent a free kick to Samuel Caballero, whose header bounced off both posts before beating Rochester goalie Scott Vallow in the 34th minute.

The Rhinos equalised in the 60th minute when Doug Miller got behind the Fire defence and beat keeper Zach Thornton.

The score remained level through the rest of regulation and two 15-minute extra time periods, setting up the penalties.

Each team scored twice before Rochester's Jonathan Bolanos hit the left post and Chicago, the three-time US Open Cup champions, went on to win.

Thornton made four saves and also added a goal during the penalty shootout for the Fire.

Chicago will face FC Dallas in the semi-finals on Sept. 14.
