Scotland: Rangers boss McLeish aims for perfect end to wonder week [Fri Aug 26th, 2005]

Glasgow (Reuters) - Rangers manager Alex McLeish is determined to cap a wonder week for the club by thumping Hibernian in Saturday's Scottish Premier League clash.

The Glasgow giants clinched a lucrative UEFA Champions League berth in midweek after disposing of Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta 4-1 on aggregate.

That victory followed a memorable 3-1 home win over arch-rivals Celtic in their league showdown last weekend.

McLeish savoured the Champions League draw which placed Rangers with Inter Milan, Artmedia Bratislava and Porto, telling Friday's news conference: "We would love to cap off what has been a fantastic week for us.

"And I believe the players will have the mental strength to go about it the right way. I don't see them taking the foot off the pedal in this one and that makes us quite a dangerous team."

Rangers are second in the standings with nine points from four games, three points behind Hearts. Hibernian are one of four teams on seven points.

McLeish said reports linking him with Everton's unsettled Scottish international James McFadden were mere speculation, but confirmed he would like to add to his squad.

However, the Rangers manager added: "I have to credit them (chairman and board), they have gone over budget already.

"So we've already pushed the boat out , but it is not saying there won't be something there. We have just got to be mindful of the long-term damage."
