Former Sweden goalkeeper Hedman retires [Sat Aug 27th, 2005]
Stockholm (Reuters) - Former Sweden and Celtic goalkeeper Magnus Hedman has announced his retirement, citing a lack of motivation as the reason.
"It's hard to be number one and then go to the bench," the 32-year-old told the website of the Swedish daily Expressen. "The motivation has dropped."
Hedman was Sweden's first choice at Euro 2000 and the World Cup finals two years later.
But Stade Rennes youngster Andreas Isaksson then took over in goal and Hedman was unable to force his way into the side for Euro 2004 in Portugal.
Hedman began his career with AIK Stockholm before moving to the English Premier League in 1997 to join Coventry City.
Coventry were relegated in 2001 and Hedman left for Celtic a year later.
He was unable to win a regular starting place at the Glasgow club and was released at the end of last season.
