Solano left out of Peru squad [Sat Aug 27th, 2005]

Lima (Reuters) - Midfielder Nolberto Solano has been left out of Peru's squad for next month's World Cup qualifier away to Venezuela, increasing speculation of a row between himself and coach Freddy Ternero.

Solano was left on the bench for the match at home to Uruguay last June, when the 0-0 draw virtually ended Peru's chances of qualifying for their first World Cup since 1982.

Afterwards, the 30-year-old, who is based with English premier league club Aston Villa, suggested he had played his last match for his country.

Midfielder Roberto Palacios, who has publicly criticised Ternero, was also omitted.

Peru are ninth in the 10-nation South American World Cup qualifying group with 15 points from the same number of games. They trail Venezuela, their opponents in Maracaibo on September 3, on goal difference.

The two sides drew 0-0 in Lima last year.

Bayern Munich striker Claudio Pizarro will also miss the match as he is suspended.

Ternero took over last April from Brazilian Paulo Autuori, who quit when the Peruvian Congress publicised details of his salary and summoned him to explain whether it was justified.

The top four teams in the group qualify directly for Germany next year and the fifth plays off over two legs against the winners of the Oceania region.
