England: Sorensen pens Villa extension [Sat Aug 27th, 2005]

Aston Villa goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen has signed a new three-year contract which will keep him at the club until the northern summer of 2008.

The 29-year-old, who was in the final season of his current deal, joined Villa from Sunderland two years ago.

The Danish international, who has started the season in impressive form, has made 87 starts for David O'Leary's side.

Sorensen had an outstanding first season at Villa in 2003-04 when they missed out on qualifying for Europe on goal difference.

His form dipped by his own high standards when he returned to Villa after the 2004 European Championship but he has been back to his best during the current campaign.

Sorensen maintained throughout the northern summer he was willing to sign a new deal.

Villa manager David O'Leary said: "Thomas has been an excellent signing for Villa and great value for money at £2 million along with people like Gavin McCann and Nolberto Solano.

"It is good news that he has signed up and I think he can be an excellent keeper for this club for many years to come."
