Germany: Bayern beat Hertha to go clear at top of Bundesliga [Sat Aug 27th, 2005]

Frankfurt (Reuters) - Bayern Munich maintained their perfect start to the new season by beating Hertha Berlin 3-0 to move two points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

Michael Ballack broke the deadlock early in the second half with a deflected free kick and late goals from Mehmet Scholl and Roy Makaay sealed a third successive victory.

None of the other four teams starting the day on six points were capable of extending their winning records.

Cologne, knocked out of the Cup last weekend, were beaten 3-2 at home by Kaiserslautern, and Schalke 04, Hamburg SV and Werder Bremen were all held to draws.

Schalke, last season's runners-up, had to settle for a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach, Werder Bremen were held 1-1 by VfB Stuttgart and Hamburg SV had to come from behind to draw 1-1 with Hannover 96.
