Belgium: Portillo agrees to Bruges deal [Wed Aug 31st, 2005]

Real Madrid striker Javier Portillo has followed Michael Owen out of the Santiago Bernabeu, agreeing to join Belgian champions Bruges on a year-long loan deal.

The 23-year-old was named among the substitutes for Madrid's Primera Liga opener at Cadiz on Sunday, but has decided to leave the Spanish capital in search of regular first-team football.

Portillo, who has scored 6 goals in 31 league appearances for Madrid, first caught the eye after setting various goalscoring records for Real's 'B' and 'C' teams.

He scored 13 goals in all competitions for Madrid in the 2002-03 season, but has since failed to hold down a regular place in the team and spent half of last season on loan with Italian side Fiorentina.
