Scotland: Rangers sign Greek, target Nigerian [Wed Aug 31st, 2005]

Rangers have completed the signing of Sotirios Kyrgiakos on a one-year deal.

The Greece international impressed in the second half of last season while on loan from Panathinaikos, helping the Ibrox club clinch the Bank of Scotland Premier League title and the CIS Insurance Cup.

Rangers initially appeared to have failed to land the defender on a permanent move over the northern summer, but manager Alex McLeish renewed his interest ahead of the transfer deadline and has now secured the services of the player.

The 26-year-old adapted well to life in the SPL last season and McLeish regularly expressed his desire to hold on to the player when his loan deal expired.

Kyrgiakos also claimed he wanted to remain in Glasgow, but the move broke down after protracted talks and the Ibrox club recruited the services of Jose-Karl Pierre-Fanfan and Julien Rodriguez instead.

However, the Greek failed to win a move elsewhere and clearly remained in McLeish's thoughts as he assembles a squad for their defence of the title as well as the UEFA Champions League.

A statement on the club's official website, www.rangers.co.uk said: "Rangers Football Club can confirm that Sotirios Kyrgiakos has signed a one-year deal with the club.

"We are delighted to have acquired his signature, having received permission from the SFA, SPL and FIFA."

Nigerian striker Julius Aghahowa claims he is also on McLeish's wanted list.

The 23-year-old plays for Ukraine outfit Shakhtar Donetsk and insists he has been targeted by the Scottish champions.

Aghahowa is reported to have a buyout clause for £5.5 million, but Rangers are believed to be keen on a season-long loan deal before considering a permanent move.

Aghahowa admits he would jump at the opportunity to join Rangers.

He told www.skysports.com: "I've been made aware by my club that a bid has been made by Glasgow Rangers. I'm honoured as Rangers are one of the biggest clubs in Britain.

"My agent (Saif Rubie) has been working hard to get a me a move to Britain and, if a transfer does materialise, I'd be very happy to come."

Rubie added: "There is on-going dialogue, but I can't say anything until a deal between the two parties is agreed."
