Spanish Copa chaos looming [Wed Aug 31st, 2005]
The Spanish Copa del Rey could be thrown into chaos after three Segunda B sides started legal action over a late change in format which they believe could cost them thousands of euros.
The Spanish FA (RFEF) last Friday decided to change the format of the competition, hours before the draw for the second round.
The previous format would have seen the surviving sides from Spain's Segunda B and Third Divisions go into the hat with sides from the Primera Liga and Segunda.
The late change of plan means the second round is now only going to be played involving sides from the Segunda division.
The next round will see the Segunda B and Third Division sides go back into the draw along with the Primera Liga sides who have not played in Europe.
That round will be only one game, playing in the home ground of the smaller club.
However, the nine sides who are playing in Europe will not enter the competition until the last 16 and when they enter the Copa, the format changes again to make the round a two-legged affair.
