England: West Brom bag Luton's Davies [Thu Sep 1st, 2005]
West Bromwich Albion snapped up highly-rated Luton Town defender Curtis Davies for £3 million in a late transfer deadline day deal.
The £3 million fee for Davies, 20, who has signed a four-year deal, is a record for the Baggies and was the third-biggest move between English clubs on the last day of the transfer window.
West Brom manager Bryan Robson told the club’s website: "I believe he’s got a really good future in the game. Curtis is one of the most outstanding young centre halves I’ve seen for some time."
The arrival of Davies at the Hawthorns takes Albion’s summer spending to £9 million. They have already signed Nathan Ellington, Darren Carter, Diomansy Kamara, Steve Watson – plus Chris Kirkland on loan.
Davis, who is 6ft 2in, made 62 appearances for Luton, scoring two goals, the second of which was on Monday in the Hatters’ 2-1 win over Millwall.
He joined the club as a 16-year-old triallist and made his debut two years later.
