Holland: AZ swoop for Steinsson [Thu Sep 1st, 2005]
AZ Alkmaar have filled the gap left by the departure of Jan Kromkamp to Villarreal by signing Gretar Steinsson on a five-year contract.
The 23-year-old Icelandic defender has joined from Swiss outfit BSC Young Boys after passing a medical with AZ.
Steinsson, who spent two seasons in Switzerland, has scored two goals in six appearances for his country.
Steinsson told AZ's website: "It has been a hectic couple of weeks but I'm very happy that things are done now. After I heard that AZ were interested in signing me I only wanted one thing - to go to Alkmaar.
"AZ have surprised everybody with their attacking football in both Holland and Europe and I am proud that they wanted to have me as a player. They have again got great results in recent weeks and it will be special to train under (coach) Louis van Gaal.
"He is known all over the world, it will be fantastic to be able to work with him. And with AZ also getting a beautiful new stadium next year, there were enough reasons to choose the club."
AZ, however, have opted not to sign Georgian defender Zurab Khizanishvili from Rangers.
