Spain: Sociedad take Atletico's Novo [Thu Sep 1st, 2005]

Real Sociedad have signed Atletico Madrid midfielder Alvaro Novo.

Novo, who was contracted to Atletico until June 2006, negotiated a deal with his former club to terminate the agreement.

The 27-year-old joined Atletico from Mallorca two years ago but struggled for form and subsequently lost his place in the side.

He made 32 appearances for the Madrid outfit in his first season, but played only five times last term.

Novo could be asked to fill the shirt vacated by veteran Russia international Valery Karpin, who retired at the end of last season.
