England: Portsmouth sign Uruguayan Silva, Senegal's Diao [Thu Sep 1st, 2005]

London (Reuters) - Uruguay international Dario Silva has joined Portsmouth from Sevilla for an undisclosed fee, the Premier League club said on their website.

Silva, who helped Sevilla finish sixth in Spain last season, signed a two-year contract with Portsmouth.

The 32-year-old striker scored 14 goals in 34 appearances after joining the Primera Liga club in 2003.

Silva has also had spells with Cagliari, Espanyol and Malaga.

Portsmouth also signed Senegal midfielder Salif Diao from Liverpool on a year's loan just before the transfer deadline.

The 28-year-old Diao joined Liverpool for 5 million pounds (US$8.92 million) three years ago following the 2002 World Cup, but never established himself as a first-team regular.

"Salif is a competitive midfield man and with his addition, we now have a very competitive midfield in itself," Portsmouth chief executive Peter Storrie told the website.
