Copa Sudamericana: Cruzeiro, Internacional through to second stage [Fri Sep 2nd, 2005]
Cruzeiro and Internacional booked their places in the second stage of the Copa Sudamericana after victories against fellow Brazilian teams.
Cruzeiro lost 1-0 against Juventude at home but went through 3-2 on aggregate after their 3-1 away victory in the first leg.
Juventude opened the scoring in the first minute thanks to a header of Ederson but could not find the back of the net again as the home defence held out.
"We played very badly but we qualified and that is important," said Cruzeiro boss Paulo Cesar Gusmao. "We have to improve for the next games and I'm not satisfied with the performance of the team."
Cruzeiro will now meet Argentina's Velez in the second round.
Internacional drew 1-1 against Copa Libertadores champions Sao Paulo to complete a 3-2 aggregate victory.
The game was suspended at the end of the first half by 15 minutes after a power failure caused by an electric storm.
Souza opened the scoring for Sao Paulo four minutes before half-time from inside the box with a strong shot.
Internacional went on to the attack after the break and levelled the game, when Fernandao scored from the penalty spot.
Sao Paulo attacked desperately, looking for the goal which would send the game to a penalty shootout, but they could not find it.
Internacional will now meet Rosario Central of Argentina in the next round.
