Hungary thump Malta 4-0 to keep alive World Cup chances [Mon Sep 5th, 2005]
Budapest (Reuters) - Hungary crushed Group Eight rivals Malta 4-0 to keep alive their outside chances of qualifying for next year's World Cup finals.
Third-placed Hungary have 13 points from seven games, five behind Sweden and six adrift of leaders Croatia. Malta are bottom of the table with one point.
Panathinaikos striker Sandor Torghelle opened the scoring for the home team with a cool finish in the 35th minute.
Brian Said put through his own net 12 minutes into the second half before Ferencvaros midfielder Akos Takacs made it 3-0 with a thunderous strike from 28 metres.
Substitute Peter Rajczi completed the rout with a close-range header seven minutes from the end.
