World Cup qualifying: Latvia qualification hopes jolted by defeat in Estonia [Mon Sep 5th, 2005]
Tallinn (Reuters) - Latvia's chances of World Cup qualification took a nosedive when they lost 2-1 to Baltic neighbours Estonia in a Group Three game.
Andres Oper gave Estonia an 11th-minute lead before Maksim Smirnov broke through the Latvian defence to make it 2-0 with 20 minutes left.
Jurijs Laizans pulled a goal back for the visitors in the final minute.
Latvia and Estonia both have 14 points from 10 games and trail leaders Portugal by six points. Portugal play hosts to Luxembourg later on.
