US: New England set for MLS record [Mon Sep 5th, 2005]
Super sub Khano Smith scored in the 76th minute to give the New England Revolution a 1-0 victory at Real Salt Lake.
The rookie forward entered the match in the 75th minute and scored the only goal of the game less than 60 seconds later when he beat goalkeeper DJ Countess.
The strike pulled Eastern Conference leaders New England within one win of the club record and saw them surpass the franchise mark in points with 47.
The loss was the sixth in a row for Salt Lake (5-16-4), who have allowed 16 goals during the skid.
Despite outshooting New England 13-7 Salt Lake were unable to beat keeper Matt Reis, who earned his eighth shut-out of the season and 20th career.
Jason Kreis went closest for Salt Lake in the 48th minute, but his shot bounced off the crossbar.
Meanwhile, Ante Razov's equaliser in the 88th minute against the Kansas City Wizards extended the MetroStars' unbeaten run at home to 10 games.
Kansas City took an early lead when Ryan Pore scored his first career goal 50 seconds into the match, beating former Wizard Tony Meola, who signed with the MetroStars in June.
Youri Djorkaeff levelled in the 27th minute but Josh Wolff restored Kansas City's lead in the 51st minute with his seventh goal of the season.
Then Razov's free kick secured the draw for the MetroStars, who entered the game six points behind the fourth and final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.
Meola made six saves for the MetroStars, who are 0-1-2 against the Wizards but have a chance to even the season series when they visit Kansas City on September 10.
Second-half goals from Ronald Cerritos and Alejandro Moreno saw the San Jose Earthquakes post a 2-0 victory over slumping FC Dallas.
San Jose (47 points) stretched their lead to 11 points over Dallas in the Western Conference.
And FC Dallas remained winless at Pizza Hut Park and winless in their last nine matches overall - a club record.
Cerritos looked to be offside when he headed in a cross from Mark Chung from eight yards out in the 50th minute, but the goal was allowed to stand.
And three minutes later, Moreno blasted a shot from 22 yards just inside the left upright that caught Dallas goalkeeper Scott Garlick completely flat-footed.
Terry Cooke's second goal of the season saw the Colorado Rapids extend their unbeaten streak to five games with a 1-0 victory over DC United.
After receiving a cross pass from Jean-Philippe Peguero, Cooke fired a shot past goalkeeper Nick Rimando into the top corner in the 22nd minute.
The tally came 10 minutes after Dan Gargan missed a sitter wide for Colorado.
Joe Cannon made five saves in his seventh clean sheet of the season.
He denied Jamie Moreno during stoppage time in the first half and pulled off a point-blank save from Bryan Namoff in the 59th minute to preserve the lead.
Moreno was sent off in the 65th minute for United - who have now lost three of their last four matches.
John Wolyniec scored twice in in the second half to lead the Columbus Crew to a 3-0 triumph over CD Chivas USA that kept alive their hopes of a playoff place.
Columbus, who entered the game 12 points behind idle Chicago for the last play-off berth in the Eastern Conference, took the lead in the 34th minute, when Cornell Glen fired a shot through the legs of goalkeeper Sergio Garcia.
Wolyniec doubled the Crew's advantage in the 60th minute, taking a pass from Glen and beating Garcia with a low shot.
And just over nine minutes later, a deflection found its way to Wolyniec, who buried it for his fifth goal of the season.
Jonny Walker made two saves for the Crew (9-12-3), who have now won three straight games.
Gomez made five saves for Chivas (3-18-5), who are winless since July 22 and have conceded a league-high 56 goals.
