MetroStars 2, Kansas City Wizards 2
Ante Razov scored in the dying minutes of the match to give the Metros an important point as they try to remain in the playoff hunt. Razov hit a blistering free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, beating keeper Bo Oshoniyi.
Wizard rookie Ryan Pore opened his MLS account just 50 seconds into the match after Kerry Zavagnin found him. However, Youri Djorkaeff evened the match mid-way through the first half, taking an Amado Guevara free kick and beating Oshoniyi.
Josh Wolff put the ‘Zards up again, taking a pass from Davy Arnaud and nutmegging his ex-teammate Tony Meola. The two sides will meet again next weekend as they conclude a home-and-home series.
FC Dallas 0, San Jose Earthquakes 2
San Jose used a pair of goals early in the second half to down FC Dallas, extending their lead in the Western Conference as well as the Hoops’ winless streak to nine matches. Both sides had chances in the first half, but both keepers were up to the task.
Steve Jolley forced Pat Onstad to make one of his two saves on the night at the half-hour mark, snapping a header off of a corner kick. San Jose's best chance came off a cheeky dribbling display by midfielder Ricardo Clark, but his shot missed the net.
However, just after the break Ronald Cerritos opened the scoring, taking a pass from Mark Chung and beating Scott Garlick on a nice header. Alejandro Moreno doubled the lead three minutes later on an impressive move before beating Garlick.
Arturo Alvarez's cross for Ronnie O'Brien in the 72nd minute was the Hoops' best chance in the half, but it was easily taken by Onstad. The Quakes killed the game after that, making FCD chase them around the park while they played keep-a-way.
Colorado Rapids 1, DC United 0
Colorado extended their unbeaten streak to five matches as they make a late-season push in the Western Conference, while DC United were held scoreless after their five-goal outburst on Wednesday.
The only goal of the match came just as the US men’s national team booked their trip to Germany - 22 minutes after the kickoff. Hunter Freeman sent Jean Philippe Peguero down the right wing on a through ball and the Haitian found Terry Cooke unmarked on the back post for his second MLS goal.
United had several chances, the best of which Christian Gomez put well wide of the goal after Jaime Moreno sent him into the penalty box unmarked. DC’s ability to earn a draw took a severe blow just after the hour mark when Moreno was sent off for clipping Freeman after the whistle had already been blown.
WIthout their captain, United never tested the bleached blond Joe Cannon as their strikers were not able to make runs to create chances. Colorado had two late chances to seal the victory, but United keeper Nick Rimando saved both Fabrice Noel's and David Ben Dayan's shots.
Real Salt Lake 0, New England 1
The Revs used a Khano Smith strike, their only shot on goal in the match, to knock off the expansion hosts as they swept the season series. DJ Countess returned to the nets for Real Salt Lake, but couldn’t snap the team out of their four game losing skid.
RSL played the top team in MLS tough, showing more heart after their embarrassing 5-1 loss to DC on Wednesday, but were unable to earn a result.
They had a pair of quality chances in the first half, but defender Marshall Leonard cleared Robert Scarlett’s blast off the goal line in the 21st minute and keeper Matt Reis parried an Andy Williams shot wide just seven minutes later.
Striker Jason Kreis almost gave Real their goal just after half-time, but his bid hit the crossbar after passing Reis. Smith scored the game-winner just two minutes after coming on as a second-half sub. He outraced Brain Kamler and beat D.J. Countess with a low shot for his third goal of the season, two of which have been as a substitute against RSL.
Chivas USA 0, Columbus Crew 3
Columbus ruined the return of Chivas to the Home Depot Center by winning the battle of the cellar dwellers. Cornell Glen had several chances that were denied by new keeper Sergio Garcia, before finally breaking through just after the half-hour mark.
The Trinidad international took an errant pass that was intended for Ezra Hendrickson and made a run into the box before beating Garcia to the keeper’s left. The Goats had their best chance in the 37th minute, but Jonny Walker was up to the task on one of his two saves.
John Wolyniec sealed the win for Columbus in the second half with a pair of goals. His first, coming on the hour mark, was a one timed shot off a Glen pass, while his second came off a rebound that Garcia kick-saved, but sent the ball right to the former MetroStar.
With the win, Columbus extended their streak to three straight victories, all of them via shut-outs by Walker.
