Spain: Primera Liga Sunday Wrap [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

Samuel Eto'o scored twice as Barcelona recorded their first win of the season against nine-man Mallorca, while Cadiz won at Racing and Real Sociedad beat Alavés.

In their first home game of the season Frank Rijkaard’s Barça side cruised to a 2-0 victory, and had wrapped up all three points before Mallorca saw two men sent off within three second-half minutes.

Eto’o fired home his first effort against his former club after 26 minutes and then tapped in a rebound in the 32nd minute after Miguel Ángel Moya had saved Deco’s shot.

It was an impressive evening from the Cameroon international, as he was doubtful to play in the encounter on Friday after clashing heads with Damía in training, which led to him spending the night in hospital.

As Barcelona proved they scored the most goals last season en route to the title, the Catalan outfit poured forward.

But Mallorca held firm and resolutely defended after Sergio Ballesteros received his marching orders in the 70th minute for a second bookable offence and then Javíer Farinós followed him for a an early bath after he too was shown his second yellow card of the evening.

Jonathan Sesma earned himself a place in Cadíz’s record books as he scored the goal that earned the Andalucian side their first victory in the Spanish top flight since the 1992-93 season.

The newly-promoted side recorded a 1-0 victory at Racing Santander when Sesma netted eight minutes from time.

Real Sociedad showed Alavés that life in the first division will not be easy the home side won the Basque derby 2-1 in the Anoeta.

A 10th-minute penalty from José Barkero put the San Sebastian-based team in front after ten minutes and the midfielder doubled his tally 11 minutes before the break.

Enrique De Lucas netted a consolation in the final minute of play, but by then it was too little, too late.

Alessandro Tacchinardi was sent off four minutes from the end of Villarreal's 1-1 draw with Sevilla in El Madrigal.

The visitors had takent he lead after 41 minutes through Adriano Correia, but the Yellow Submarines fought back and Lucho Figueroa earned them a share of the spoils with a strike in the 74th minute.

Tacchinardi, on loan at Villarreal from Juventus for the season, was shown a direct red and thwarted his side's chances of snatching all three points from the game.

Bernd Schuster's Getafe showed that they intend to stay up for the third consecutive season, despite the doubters, by earning a creditable 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Bilbao.

Daniel Güiza fired the Madrilenians in front after 26 minutes, but Javier Casas levelled four minutes before the break. Diego Rivas was dismissed in second-half injury time for a deliberate hand ball for Getafe.

David Villa scored his first league goal for Valencia to earn them a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw on their trip to his former club, Real Zaragoza.

The visitors' took the lead through Miguel Ángel Angulo, but were pegged back almost immediatly when Ewerthon scored for Zaragoza and then fell behind when Cani fired home.

But Los Ché secured a point when Villa came off the bench to score with only his second touch of the match against the club that he left in the summer. The striker did not celebrate his effort as a sign of respect.

The midweek bickering at Espanyol did not stop them from chalking up an important away win as they took away a 2-1 victory from their trip to Málaga.

Pablo Zabaleta opened the scoring for the Parakeets with a superb lob and then Luis García netted his first for the club following a summer move from Mallorca.

The home side did pull a goal back when Gerardo fired home the penalty spot, but they could not find a way through a second time.
