Argentina's Mascherano faces possible foot operation [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

Rio de Janeiro (Reuters) - Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano faces a possible foot operation and could be out of action for the rest of this year, according to his Brazilian club Corinthians.

"Mascherano has a suspected stress fracture in his left foot and will undergo some tests," Corinthians doctor Flavio Fallopa told reporters.

21-year-old Mascherano, a regular for his country since last year, joined Corinthians from River Plate for US$15 million in July, and has been out of action with an injury in his right thigh since August 10.

He missed Argentina's friendly away to Hungary in August and the World Cup qualifier away to Paraguay at the start of this month.

Mascherano is one of a number of high-profile signings made by Corinthians since they agreed a controversial partnership deal with London-based Media Sports Investments at the end of last year.
