France: Lyon plans for 60,000 stadium [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has revealed plans for a new 60,000 capacity stadium which could be open by 2011.
Les Gones currently play at the Stade Gerland, which holds 39,000, and Aulas wants the club to move into a more modern arena.
"The Lyon mayor (Gerard Collomb) is trying to find a way to help us out in order to build a stadium that would welcome more people," Aulas said.
"We are currently finishing off a written project that will be given to the relevant people."
Collomb has been exploring ways of expanding the Stade Gerland, but that has proved difficult.
It remains his preferred option, but he will allow a new stadium to be built if expansion proves impossible.
"I am aware that the stadium is too small," said Collomb, "It can hold 39,000 people when we could welcome 60,000.
"I want to do all I can to see if we can extend the arena. If we don't manage to do so I agree to have a new stadium built as long as it remains inside the city."
