Queensland to right wrongs for Melbourne match [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

Queensland skipper Chad Gibson has admitted a feeling of disappointment after the Roar suffered their first loss of the season at Perth last weekend, but declared his side were ready to put it right.

Despite dominating the match against the Glory, the Roar's defence was exposed by prolific goalscorer Bobby Despotovski on two occasions, which were enough to secure the 2-1 win for Steve McMahon's men.

Gibson said his side was upset, but even more determined to keep their perfect home record in tact when Melbourne Victory visits Suncorp Stadium.

"Obviously everybody is disappointed to have suffered our first loss, but we will aim to put that right at the weekend against Melbourne," he said.

"It was one of those games that well... if the ball had bounced for us, then we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

"The fact is that although we dominated for long periods, we didn’t take our chances when they came along. We have to punish teams more effectively and we will be working hard on doing that this week.

"We had a lot of possession against Perth, just like we have had in our other games, but no team is going to dominate for the whole 90 minutes and we have to recognise when we are under the pump and shut up shop.

"Perth had a strong 15-minute spell and punished us twice.

"On the positive side, it would be worrying if we weren’t creating chances, but we did create eight or nine really good opportunities and on another day they will go into the net."

Gibson added: "We’re refocusing now on the big game this weekend.

"Melbourne are a good side in a false position (winless) and we will have to be on top of our game to get the right result. We want to stay up there with the leaders and with the support we can expect at home we have every chance of winning the match."
