Greek First Division Wrap [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

Panathinaikos, a week after they faced a shameful 0-2 home defeat in the Greek “El Classico” against Olympiakos, had another negative result as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Ionikos.

The home side netted an early goal through Makor in the 5th minute and kept their lead for the rest of the first half. However after the interval Panathinaikos launched an aggressive attack and Wooter four minutes into the second half was not only awarded a penalty, but also saw Ionikos’ goalkeeper sent off for the challenge.

Gonzalez converted from the penalty spot to make it 1-1, but Panathinaikos’ extra-man advantage didn’t last long, as Seric was sent off in the 77th minute when he deliberately hit the home side’s defender Tsimblides. And although Ionikos lost another player in the 88th minute, for a second yellow card offence this time, Pana failed to find the goal that would have given them a valuable win.

Elsewhere, AEK had no problem at home against Iraklis Thessalonika and defeated them 2-0. Greece’s golden scorer in the game against Kazakhstan, Nikos Lymberopoulos, opened in the 18th minute with a header and three minutes before the end of the first half after an excellent move by Katsouranis and Malbassa, Caesar closed the encounter with a nice shot from close range.

Also Egaleo defeated newly-promoted Akratitos 1-0 at home. The only goal was scored by Agritis with a header after a corner by Tsatsos ten minutes into the game.

Following their big win against PAOK Thessalonika at home, Xanthi were held away in a 1-1 draw against OFI Crete. French defender, Pavio, gave the advantage to the visitors in injury time of the first half with a powerful free kick from well outside the penalty area.

However, the team from Crete responded seventeen minutes into the second half when, due to a mess in the defence of the club from northern Greece, Zapropoulos scored an own goal in his attempt to clear the ball.

Finally, Apollon Thessalonika shared the points at home against newly-promoted Levadiakos.

The home side took the lead with a penalty by Papadopoulos in the 67th minute, but two minutes later Levadiakos levelled the game with a free kick by the Bulgarian midfielder, Ivan Rousef, who was sent off a minute later with a second yellow card offence because he took off his jersey to celebrate his goal.
