Brasileirão Match Report Week 25: Vasco 5 Juventude 2 [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

In a hot afternoon to remember, Vasco (15th – 32) played their first ever game with a female refereeing trio, scored their first free kick in 2005, wiped the floor with decadent Juventude, and Renato Gaúcho had the pleasure of hearing his name chanted (adoringly) from start to end.

Vasco battened down their opponents after nineteen minutes, battering the southerners with a non-stop series of attacks that cam close but lacked that final touch.

Five minutes from the break the dam burst as Romário put striking partner Alex Dias through; his shot was pushed away by Fabiano but Abedi got the rebound and the goal. The visitors fought tooth and nail for the equaliser, and a minute from the whistle Marcelinho (44 min) latched onto a botched clearance by Ygor and slotted a cool goal past Roberto’s charging bulk: 1-1.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Renato Gaúcho replaced defensive midfielder Osmar with midfield dynamo Róbson Luiz, and Róbson (58 min) had the skill required to nail Vasco’s second from a free kick; a hitherto unseen phenomenon from Vasco this year: 2-1. Five minutes later Morais made it 3-1 with an impeccable 34-yard missile.

Josiel (69 min) pulled one back for the visitors (3-2) as he headed in a corner, but Ref Sílvia Regina torpedoed any embryonic reaction by pointing to the spot for no particular reason: Vasco made it 4-2 through the irrepressible Romário.

The Baixinho almost got his brace three minutes from time, but Fabiano’s save was clinically put away by marksman Alex Dias – joint Brasileirão top scorer alongside Robgol (Paysandu) and Marcinho (Palmeiras), all three with 15 goals to date.
