Argentina: San Lorenzo remain on top after outstanding display [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]
San Lorenzo stay top after crushing Rosario Central 4-0 away from home, thanks to double strikes by Ariel Pereyra and Jose Saturnino Cardozo.
Centre back Ariel Pereyra put San Lorenzo ahead in the 4th minute after outjumping a defender to head home a corner kick swung in by Colombian midfielder Mauricio Molina.
Rosario Central’s Roman Diaz almost levelled the score, but his long distance missile rattled the bar.
With five minutes of the first half remaining San Lorenzo went two up, and in very similar circumstances to the first goal. Molina crossed in a corner from the left and Pereyra climbed highest and headed the ball into the far post.
In the second half San Lorenzo continued to pressure their opponents, and in the 72nd minute they added their third. Walter Montillo broke down the right wing, and sent in a cross that Jose Saturnino Cardozo met with a miskick, but fortunately for him it miraculously looped over Rosario goalkeeper Juan Ojeda and into the back of the net, for the Paraguayan's first of the season.
Just four minutes later Cardozo added his second, but this time it was a trademark strike. Cardozo controlled a weak Montillo goal ward effort and struck a precise shot on the turn from outside the box, to complete a four goal hammering.
The victory keeps San Lorenzo on top of the table, while Rosario dropped to tenth position.
Argentine Clausura champions Velez Sarsfield climbed to sixth, after a hard fought 1-0 victory over bottom of the table Tiro Federal. Although Velez played large part of the match with ten men after the sending off of Ariel Broggi in the 48th minute, they were able to snatch a revitalising win.
Once again star midfielder Lucas Castroman was the hero of the night, scoring a spectacular individual goal in the 61st minute. Castroman took on the Tiro defense singlehandedly and beat goalkeeper Jorge Vivaldo with a powerful shot to the left post for his tenth goal of the year.
