Brasileirão Match Report Week 25: Corinthians 2 Atlético Paranaense 0 [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

With their first victory in five games, Márcio Bittencourt’s Alvinegro saved their coach’s neck. The game lived up to expectations with the Rubro-negro visitors pulling out all the stops to sink the Timão and climb the Brasileirão table.

During the first two minutes each team had come close to taking the lead; Fabrício, on behalf of the Furacão, and Gustavo Nery for Corinthians (5th - 43). The initial breakneck pace slowed as both teams realised this could be a game that went down to the wire.

The first half was a tactical battle; neither side letting any defensive slip-ups compromise the result and both keepers rock solid when they needed to be. Pushed forward by their Fiel fans, the Timão moved up a gear and pounded the visitors’ defence.

13 minutes into the second half, Nilmar was brought down close to the corner flag. Young wing-back Eduardo Ratinho crossed into the box and Marcelo Mattos slammed a shot into the Atlético net: 1-0.

A recovering Carlos Alberto came on for Bruno Octavio, victim of cramp, and Rosinei robbed a ball that Carlos Alberto walloped past Diego to make it 2-0. The Furacão came close to narrowing the gap, but Corinthians hung on tooth and nail.
