Brasileirão Match Report Week 25: Coritiba 1 São Paulo 4 [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

São Paulo (16th – 31) continue their recovery from the post-Libertadores panic attack that saw them plummet to the arse-end of the Brasileirão table, leaving Coritiba squelched in their wake.

After slicing through Corinthians in the midweek 24th round, the Tricolor grabbed another three points in Paraná with a stellar performance by Cicinho.

The absences of defender Fabão and striker Amoroso were outweighed by the return of Lugano, Cicinho and Josué. São Paulo went ahead through a Rogério Ceni (20 min) penalty, the sharpshooting keeper succeeding where Renaldo fluffed a similar chance for the hosts in the seventh minute.

Coritiba came back through a rare Cicinho lapse, Capixaba – who suffered the wasted penalty – outrunning the right back and getting the equaliser. The second half, however, was a monologue of Tricolor attacks even though Fábio Santos managed to get himself sent off with two amateurish fouls in three minutes.

Five minutes later Christian (70 min) nodded in a Cicinho cross, and the Madrid-bound wing-back helped midfielder Hernanes (73 min) to SPFC’s third. Five minutes from time Cicinho himself was up in lights as he slipped a neat shot past a charging Douglas to shut up shop at 1-4.

São Paulo fans can breathe a sigh of relief as their team finally rise above the relegation zone.
