Brasileirão Match Report Week 25: Paraná 1 Palmeiras 3 [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

After harvesting two bitter results – a 3-2 defeat against Brasiliense and a drab one-all draw at home to Coritiba – Emerson Leão’s men vented their rage on Paraná Clube in rural Maringá (PR), getting their revenge for the first Brasileirão clash at the Parque Antártica when the Paranaenses beat the Verdão 2-1.

Diego Souza replaced Pedrinho and repaid the tough Coach with sparkling attacking play, getting voluble support from a crowd that was mainly Palmeirense. Marcinho was his closest ally, the two ripping the Paraná defense to shreds. Juninho Paulista (16 min) pulled a golden move out of his box of tricks, spinning on a sixpence to thump the ball past Darci: 0-1.

Palmeiras (8th – 35) relaxed a little too much, and after Sérgio saved the equaliser in the twentieth minute, Fabiano childishly gave the ball away to Neto, who dribbled through the hapless left-back twice before hammering the ball past Sérgio: 1-1. Paraná almost turned the result over, but Sérgio was solid.

The second Verdão goal arrived seven minutes into the second half, Correa telegraphing a pass for Gioino to tap across and give Juninho (52 min) a chance for a brace that he didn’t waste: 1-2. Paraná threw away any hope of coming back as five minutes later Daniel Marques was off for a mistimed tackle.

The coup de grace was a 30-yard rocket that Marcinho (77 min) unleashed after Juninho had gone off to a standing ovation. The rest of the game was a monologue of Palmeiras possession, ‘olé’s from the stands and singing in the (torrential) rain.
