England: Premier League match reports [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

London (Reuters) - Reports of Premier League matches played over the last three days:

Played on Monday:

WEST HAM UNITED 4 ASTON VILLA 0

Striker Marlon Harewood opened his account for the season with a 25-minute hat-trick, scoring with three right-footed shots between the 25th and 50th minutes. His first was laid on by fellow forward Teddy Sheringham, while the other two goals came from set pieces.

Israeli international midfielder Yossi Benayoun added the goal with a left-footed shot one minute from time.

Played on Sunday:

BOLTON WANDERERS 0 BLACKBURN ROVERS 0

Neither side really deserved the point they earned given the quality of the football on show in a gritty, Lancashire derby at the Reebok stadium. Bolton did most of the attacking, but Rovers stuck to their task of containment and might have snatched the win had Lucas Neill got a late shot on target.

Played on Saturday:

BIRMINGHAM CITY 0 CHARLTON ATHLETIC 1

Charlton striker Darren Bent headed the visitors in front after 15 minutes and that goal was enough to give the London club their fourth successive win and keep them second in the table. Birmingham rarely threatened to equalise and lie 16th in the standings with only four points from five matches.

CHELSEA 2 SUNDERLAND 0

Chelsea midfielder Geremi broke the deadlock on 54 minutes and substitute Didier Drogba secured the champions' fifth successive win with a towering header. Sunderland slumped to their fifth defeat of the season and 20th in a row in the Premier League.

EVERTON 0 PORTSMOUTH 1

Portsmouth's winner was an own goal by Everton striker Duncan Ferguson, who headed the ball into the home side's net on the hour. Everton, fourth last season, have taken only three points from their first four games, while Portsmouth's first win lifted them to 15th in the table.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1 MANCHESTER CITY 1

Ruud van Nistelrooy put United ahead on the stroke of halftime, following up to crash home the rebound after City goalkeeper David James had brilliantly saved his initial shot. Joey Barton equalised for City 14 minutes from time and Andrew Cole was denied a dramatic late winner against his former club by a superb save from United keeper Edwin van der Sar.

City stayed third and United fourth, both maintaining their unbeaten starts to the season.

NEWCASTLE UNITED 1 FULHAM 1

American striker Brian McBride stole Michael Owen's thunder when he put Fulham ahead on 13 minutes with a low shot from six metres following a poor back pass by defender Steven Taylor.

Owen had a quiet Newcastle debut, but the home side equalised 12 minutes from time with a free kick by midfielder Charles N'Zogbia, their first goal of the season. Newcastle midfielder Scott Parker was sent off in the closing stages after receiving his second yellow card.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 0 LIVERPOOL 0

An entertaining goalless draw at White Hart Lane in which both sides had efforts ruled out by linesmen because the ball was adjudged to have gone out of play from corner kicks before being headed into the net.

New strikers Gregor Rasiak of Spurs and Peter Crouch of Liverpool were the unlucky players. Both sides hit the crossbar, Norwegian John Arne Riise for Liverpool and Rasiak for Tottenham.

WEST BROMWICH ALBION 1 WIGAN ATHLETIC 2

Midfielder Jimmy Bullard grabbed a last-minute winner to earn Wigan their first away win in the top flight. Midfielder Jonathan Greening gave Albion the lead after 26 minutes with a fierce strike, but Wigan striker David Connolly equalised five minutes before half-time.

MIDDLESBOROUGH 2 ARSENAL 1

Arsenal suffered their second defeat in four matches as goals by strikers Aiyegbeni Yakubu and Massimo Maccarone sealed an unexpected victory for Middlesborough.

Yakubu curled in the first just before half-time and set up Maccarone for the second just before the hour at the Riverside Stadium.

Spain forward Jose Antonio Reyes pulled back a stoppage-time consolation for Arsenal, who missed their injured captain Thierry Henry.
