South America roundup [Tue Sep 13th, 2005]

Rio de Janeiro (Reuters) - Crowd violence marred the Uruguayan championship at the weekend when Penarol's match at home to Miramar Misiones was called off in the 83rd minute.

Former South American champions Olimpia won their first game for five months in Paraguay after Carlos Kiese took over as their fifth coach this year. In Chile, Universidad Catolica goalkeeper Jose Maria Buljubasich kept a clean sheet for the eighth match in a row.

URUGUAY

Rioting fans forced referee Martin Vazquez to abandon the Penarol-Miramar Misiones match with Penarol leading 2-1. Penarol supporters began pelting the small Miramar contingent with missiles shortly after the visitors had scored.

Media reports said trouble continued outside after the game ended and 13 Miramar fans were injured.

It was the second time this year a match between the two sides has failed to finish -- the meeting on July 3 was cut short when Penarol supporters invaded the pitch.

Penarol were playing the match at Liverpool's stadium as they were banned from using the Centenario, their usual venue, because of further crowd problems.

Rentistas lead the Apertura championship with nine points from three games after Mauricio Ibarra's goal gave them a 1-0 win over Rocha. Nacional are second after thrashing Paysandu 5-0.

PARAGUAY

Olimpia ended a 16-match winless run with a 3-1 victory over General Caballero on Carlos Kiese's debut. It was their first win since they beat Sportivo Luqueno on April 3.

Three-times winners of the Libertadores Cup, Olimpia have been rebuilding since former president Osvaldo Dominguez Dibb, who financed the team himself during a stormy 30-year reign, left the club two years ago.

Olimpia have five points from three games in the Clausura, the second stage of the championship. Cerro Porteno lead with ten points after a 3-0 win over Sportivo Luqueno.

CHILE

Universidad Catolica drew 0-0 away to Huachipato and have yet to concede a goal after eight games of the Clausura championship.

Goalkeeper Jose Maria Buljubasich, who has been ever present, has not been beaten in 783 minutes of play, the last goal against him being scored by Manuel Neira of Union Espanola in the Apertura championship on June 26.

Catolica lead Group One in the Clausura championship with 20 points from eight games.

Universidad de Chile won 1-0 away to Santiago Wanderers with an early strike from Uruguayan Juan Manuel Olivera to go top of Group Two. Cobresal and Colo Colo are the other group leaders.

COLOMBIA

Veteran striker Victor Hugo Aristizabal scored four goals as titleholders Atletico Nacional demolished Deportivo Cali 5-0.

The 33-year-old former Sao Paulo and Santos striker headed Atletico ahead in the seventh minute and added his second four minutes later with a left-foot shot following a rebound.

After Gerardo Bedoya made it 3-0 in 32 minutes, Aristizabal completed the perfect hat-trick by scoring with his right foot two minutes before halftime. A superb individual goal in the 64th minute completed his afternoon.

Atletico moved up to fourth in the table with 19 points from 10 games, five behind leaders America who suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Pereira.

ECUADOR

El Nacional's unbeaten run in the Clausura championship ended when they lost 2-1 to local rivals LDU, although the army club still lead the table with 14 points from seven games.

Felix Borja gave El Nacional a first-half lead before LDU hit back through Luis Miguel Garces and Patricio Urrutia.

PERU

Sport Ancash, who are playing in the first divison for the first time, beat Cesar Vallejo 1-0 to stay top of the championship's second stage. Javier Espejo scored the only goal in the 59th minute.

Ancash have a five-point lead over Sport Boys, Coronel Bolognesi and Sporting Cristal.
