Brazil: Palmeiras close Adidas deal for 2006 [Thu Sep 15th, 2005]
Palmeiras will swap Italian Diadora – their current clothing supplier/sponsor – for German global big boys Adidas from 2006. The three year contract was revealed yesterday, and includes the possibility of an extra two years by mutual consent.
Despite unofficially trumpeting the deal, Palmeiras refused to reveal the financial details behind the agreement. Presidential advisor Antônio Carlos Corcione informed reporters that “We just need to draw up the definitive documents, make the deal 100% official and let the president [Afonso Della Mônica] announce the deal."
Diadora have renounced an extra year of contract with the Palestra Italia club – the current contract was supposed to run until the end of 2006 – although, again, no details of compensation were revealed.
The official Presidential announcement is expected somewhere towards the end of October 2005, although many lament the end of a link to Italy, given the traditional Palmeiras fan base lying in São Paulo’s large Italian-descended population.
