Bolivia: Etcheverry attracts big names [Thu Sep 15th, 2005]

Former Bolivia international Marco Etcheverry has organised a star-studded farewell match to mark his retirement from football.

The charismatic attacking midfielder, who is 35 on September 26, hung up his boots last year and will host the game at the Tahuichi Aguilera stadium on December 19.

Etcheverry, nicknamed 'El Diablo', has confirmed that big names such as Jose Luis Chilavert, Ivan Zamorano, Carlos Valderrama and Rene Higuita will take part in the game.

Etcheverry played for Destroyers, Bolivar and Oriente Petrolero, before spells abroad with Chile's Colo Colo, America of Colombia, Ecuadorian side Barcelona and DC United in the US.

He joined DC United in 1996 and spent nine years with the club, making 191 league appearances and scoring 34 goals, as well as leading them to three MLS Cups and being named MLS MVP in 1998.

Etcheverry also earned 71 caps for Bolivia, scoring 13 goals, and played in the 1994 World Cup finals at the height of his powers before reaching the final of the Copa America in 1997, when Bolivia lost to Brazil.
