UEFA Champions League: Late goal salvages Ajax a point against Sparta [Thu Sep 15th, 2005]

Prague (Reuters) - A last-gasp goal from Wesley Sneijder salvaged Ajax a 1-1 draw with Sparta Prague in their UEFA Champions League Group B match.

Ajax had been chasing the match since the 66th minute when Sparta substitute Miroslav Matusovic scored from around 23 metres into the top right-hand corner after picking up a deflected ball.

The Dutch side wasted several attempts to level before Sneijder finally slapped home a powerful shot to beat Sparta goalie Jaromir Blazek a minute into extra time.

Ajax were happy to save the point, defensive midfielder Tomas Galasek said.

"Sparta are tough opponents at home. They wait for a mistake and can punish from a counter-attack, which they managed this time," he said.

Sparta made a cautious start, allowing Ajax to attack and the Dutch side had the better of the chances throughout.

Coach Danny Blind said Ajax should have scored more from the number of chances they had.

"We played well in the first half. Especially in the first 35 minutes we dominated and developed four chances which should be enough to win the game.

"Also in the second half we had two or three more chances. At this point I am disappointed with the result."

Sparta manager Jaroslav Hrebik acknowledged Sparta should be satisfied with the draw.

"Ajax certainly did not deserve to lose," he said. "We had big difficulties... but when we got into a lead, it is a shame that one last shot came."
