US: Kansas jettison Stephenson to sign Sumiala [Fri Sep 16th, 2005]

The Kansas City Wizards rewarded Jamaican midfielder Khari Stephenson for helping to persuade fellow Reggae Boy Jermaine Hue to sign last week by waiving Mr. Stephenson and signing Finnish international Antti Sumiala.

The 31-year old Sumiala, who hails from Pori, Finland, brings a diverse European background as well as goal-scoring punch to the Wizards as they look ahead to the MLS playoffs.

"Antti has played at a high level in Europe and with his National Team for many years," said Wizards General Manager Curt Johnson. "He adds experience and depth to our group of forwards. We welcome him and look forward to his assistance as we set our sights on the 2005 MLS Cup."

Sumiala carries 38 caps and nine international goals on his extensive resume, which includes stints in Holland, Germany, Turkey, Sweden, Switzerland (via FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein), and of course his native Finland. He will compete primarily with US international Josh Wolff and Trinidad & Tobago international Scott Sealy for playing time.

Sumiala joins the Jamaican Hue, who signed last week from Harbour View FC. With the two additions midfielder Khari Stephenson, whom Hue claimed played a part in his decision to join the Wizards, was deemed surplus by Kansas City. Hue appeared in 13 MLS matches for the Wizards after coming over from the Chicago Fire in 2004.
