Argentina midfielder Mascherano to have foot operation [Fri Sep 16th, 2005]
Rio de Janeiro (Reuters) - Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano is to have surgery on his left foot and will be out of action for the rest of this year, according to his Brazilian club Corinthians.
Corthinthians doctor Flavio Fallopa said the examinations had revealed a stress fracture in the 21-year-old's left foot.
Fallopa told reporters: "I've spoken to Mascherano and he has agreed to have the operation. Now, we need to decide where and when this will happen."
Mascherano, a regular for his country since last year, has been out of action with a thigh injury since August 10.
He missed Argentina's friendly away to Hungary and the World Cup qualifier away to Paraguay at the start of this month.
Mascherano is one of a number of high-profile signings made by Corinthians since they signed a controversial partnership deal with London-based Media Sports Investments at the end of last year. He has so far played seven matches for his new club.
