UEFA Cup Preview: Vitoria Setubal v Sampdoria [Fri Sep 16th, 2005]
The Blucerchiati debut this season in the UEFA Cup as they visit Portuguese side Vitoria Setubal.
The last time Sampdoria had played in a European competition was 1998 when they played in the InterToto final against fellow Italian side Bologna. From then onwards, the Doriani encountered difficulties and ended up playing in Serie B for some years.
Now after a triumphant season which almost ended in UEFA Champions League football, Walter Novellino’s side are ready to taste European football against as they face a difficult but still beatable Portuguese team in Vitoria Setubal.
Sampdoria will be without Pisano, suspended, but will have upfront the formidable duo of Flachi and Bonazzoli. On paper, the Genoa-based side should be able to see off their opponents over two legs, but in this first leg, with Vitoria at home, Sampdoria might encounter some difficulties.
