UEFA Cup Wrap [Fri Sep 16th, 2005]
It has been an intense night of UEFA Cup action throughout the continent tonight in the first round, first leg ties.
Roma put their recent troubles behind them with a sparkling five-star show to dispose of Greek side Aris Salonika, but Everton were hit for five as their poor start to the season an all fronts continued.
The Toffees came unstuck in Romania as Dinamo Bucharest won 5-1. Bolton came from behind to win their first ever European tie 2-1, while there were wins for Palermo, Middlesborough, Auxerre, Basel, holders CSKA Moscow, Stuttgart and Monaco. But Bayer Leverkusen, Galatasaray, Osasuna and AZ Alkmaar were all first leg casualties.
The round got off to a high-scoring start in Russia where Krylya Sovetov shocked last season's semi-finalists AZ Alkmaar 5-3. Leilton (11) put Krylya ahead but Vlaar equalised on the stroke of half-time before Adamu restored the Russians' lead and Kovba increased it. But Perez pulled one back before Husin made it 4-2. After being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League preliminaries, Everton are most likely out of the UEFA Cup too after a humiliating 5-1 defeat away to Dinamo Bucharest. Tromso surprised Galatasaray with a 1-0 home win thanks to a goal by Szekeres in the 78th minute, and the Turkish team will have to do their utmost to overturn the deficit and qualify to the next round.
The last matches of the day, Red Star Belgrade-Braga, Germinal Beerschot-Marseille, Hibernian-Dnipro D’trovsk and Sevilla-Mainz all ended in a goalless draw, thus leaving the doors wide open for any solution.
