Brazil: Palmeiras' Marcos continues bench-warming phase [Sat Sep 17th, 2005]

Despite recovering what some see as full match fitness after surgery to his wrist, 2002 World Cup-winning goalie Marcos will continue to polish the Palmeiras bench with the seat of his pants.

The first signal that the Verdão number 1 wouldn’t be part of the first eleven in the next Brasileirão game against Cruzeiro came at training. Perennial shadow Sérgio formed part of the first eleven in a kickaround with the subs.

“Marcos still isn’t back to 100%; he can’t play yet and therefore he won’t” explained Emerson Leão with his characteristic bluntness. “But the day is approaching when he’ll be ready to compete for a first eleven place,” he concluded in a more mellow tone.

Apart from dodgy defender Glauber, Marcos is the only member of the Palmeiras squad not to have played a single minute since Leão replaced Bonamigo at the Palmeiras helm, giving rise to gossip of a clash of personalities leading to a rift.
