Italy: Ballardini new coach of Cagliari [Sat Sep 17th, 2005]
Davide Ballardini has been appointed as the new coach of Cagliari.
Ballardini, who last season led Sambenedettese into Serie B, will be the third coach of Cagliari this term.
He replaces Daniele Arrigoni, who resigned his post with the Sardinian club earlier in the day, just over two weeks after replacing the sacked Attilio Tesser.
Arrigoni had returned to the post he occupied last season after quitting the club to take over at Torino in the summer.
When Lega Calcio chiefs decided not to allow Torino into Serie A because they did not meet strict financial criteria for the top flight, Arrigoni then returned to Cagliari.
However, fans angered by his defection vented their frustration at the re-appointment and Arrigoni duly resigned.
Ballardini was on the shortlist for Arrigoni's post in the summer before Tesser was appointed for what turned out to be a brief spell in the job.
Earlier the club had announced it had parted ways with Arrigoni for the second time in just a few months.
"Cagliari Calcio have agreed with first team coach Daniele Arrigoni to prematurely end the contract that he had signed until 30 June 2007," said a statement on the club website, www.cagliaricalcio.it.
"The club have taken into consideration the request made by the coach, who believed after the fans' protest that the conditions were not there for him to continue in charge of the team.
"The club wishes to thank Daniele Arrigoni for his sensitivity and his professionalism and wishes him the best of luck in his career."
