Ecuador striker set to quit [Sat Sep 17th, 2005]

Ecuador striker Agustin Delgado has announced plans to retire from international football after the 2006 World Cup.

The former Southampton player, who currently plies his trade with Barcelona in his homeland, is still suffering the effects of back surgery two years ago and admits too much football is starting to take its toll.

"I'll retire after the World Cup. It's difficult for me to go on like this," the 30-year-old told El Universal newspaper.

"After the World Cup qualifier against Bolivia (Ecuador won 2-1), my back was inflamed due to the effort put in.

"When I'm in the national team, the first thing everybody wants is me to be fine and I work on things that don't affect me. But people cannot imagine the effort I have to go through to play."
