US: MLS Preview- MetroStars v New England [Sat Sep 17th, 2005]

MetroStars (9-7-10, 37 pts) v New England Revolution (15-5-6, 51 pts)

When: 7:30 pm ET, Saturday, September 17, 2005

Where: Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey

The MetroStars begin their second consecutive home-and-away series with an Eastern Conference foe, hoping to duplicate their previous one and earn another four points.

The road will be tougher this time as they face New England, instead of Kansas City, who have won their last three games. The Metros are riding their own four-match unbeaten streak and need every point they can get while they try to climb their way up the table and into the playoffs.

The first two matches between these sides have been high-scoring affairs, as they combined for ten goals. The second meeting, a 4-2 Revolution win in Foxborough, saw the home team score three times in the final fifteen minutes to earn the three points.

The Metros defence are coming off a morale-boosting clean sheet this past weekend, Tony Meola’s first of the season, and will need to continue that type of play to shut down the Revs' high powered attack of Pat Noonan and Taylor Twellman.

While the Metros were building their self-esteem back up, the Revolution rolled over another MLS club, knocking off the Crew 3-1. All three goals were tallied by Twellman, who has five goals in his last five games. Noonan, on the other hand, has been quiet of late, but has always given the Metros fits.

New England’s defence, giving up just one goal per game over their last six matches, will look to Shalrie Joseph to shut down the midfield attack of Youri Djorkaeff and Amado Guevara. If the Grenada international is successful, the Revs could have an easy day knocking off the Metros and clinching a playoff berth in the process.
