Italy: Serie A Preview- Livorno v Roma [Sat Sep 17th, 2005]
Livorno look to make a statement as Roma come to town.
Background
Livorno have gotten themselves off to an outstanding start with 6 points from two matches, and look to put some internal struggles behind them in this big match. Star striker Christiano Lucarelli originally resigned his captaincy over a feud with the team president, however his striking ability and character have the fans backing their star.
Meanwhile Roma are coming in still looking to show the consistency that they lacked all last season. After starting the new campaign with an impressive 3-0 win against Reggina, they disappointingly dropped their last league match 1-0 to Udinesse at the Stadio Olimpico.
However, after a 5-goal explosion in mid-week UEFA Cup action, the capital outfit are looking to show that they are serious contenders this season.
The Cassano drama is also ongoing, with the sides supposedly close to an extension to the sulky superstar’s contract. Look for Cassano to be starting the match from the bench, but to see action and have an impact.
Team News
Roma:
Though they used primarily their first team in the Thursday evening UEFA Cup match, Cassano was nowhere to be seen, even from the bench. If the contract issue isn’t resolved soon there is the chance that Spalletti will again hold his star out of the match. Look for the possibility of youngster Alberto Aquilani to see some action though, after an impressive mid-week display.
Livorno:
Luis Cesar Prates and Diego De Ascentis both appear likely at present to make their first starts of the young season on Sunday.
Watch Out For
Roma:
Francesco Totti played a large role in the early round UEFA Cup game and looks early on this season to be in fine form, trying to lead the team and put a regrettable 2004-05 campaign behind him. Look for ‘il Capitano’ to be coming out to make a statement again in this key early season road clash.
Livorno:
Netminder Marco Amelia was once a part of the Roma camp, but was let go when they judged him not worth the time. Look for him to try and show himself worthy, but he will need a big showing from his defence in front of him, as Roma bring in an attack that has already netted 9 goals in three competitive matches this season.
