Russia: Spartak jump to second [Sun Sep 18th, 2005]

Spartak Moscow went second in the Russian Premier Liga with a 2-1 win at home to Tomsk.

Hrvoe Veyich put Tomsk ahead after 13 minutes only for goals from Sergei Kovalchuk and Roman Pavluchenko to turn the match around.

Spartak started well and midfielder Mozart had an early free-kick parried by Ilya Bliznuk.

However, Tomsk then scored the opener when Veyich headed in off a post after a free kick from Konstantin Skrylnikov.

Four minutes later it was 1-1 when Kovalchuk hit the top corner of the net from a long-range free kick.

The hosts created several half-chances before they scored their second goal two minutes from half-time.

Vladimir Bystrov ran down the right and got in a cross for Pavluchenko, who sent it in with one touch.

Tomsk threatened to equalise in the 48th minute, but Wojciech Kovalevski saved a Skrylnikov shot from long range.

Spartak are five points behind defending champions and city rivals Lokomotiv but two points clear of a number of clubs, CSKA Moscow, Zenit St Petersburg and FC Moscow.

FC Moscow beat Terek Grozny 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time winner from two-goal hero Dmitri Kirichenko.

Kirichenko scored after his free kick deflected off the Grozny defensive wall to give his side the points.

He could have scored as early as the ninth minute, but Ruslan Nigmatullin saved well for the team from Chechnya.

Four minutes later Hector Bracamonte also went close for FC Moscow, with Nigmatullin saving again.

The opener came after 35 minutes when Bracamonte created the chance for Kirichenko, whose left-footed shot from 20 yards found the top left-hand corner.

The hosts continued to press and Marius Jop headed over just before the break.

Grozny equalised when Ognien Koroman converted a penalty after 64 minutes and then went looking for a winner.

Substitute Atangana Mzonzo's shot was parried by Yuri Zhevnov after 68 minutes.

Then came Kirichenko's decider which kept FC Moscow in the chasing pack.

Dinamo Moscow's summer spending spree does not appear to be paying off and they slumped to a 4-1 defeat at Amkar Perm.

By the time Derlei scored for Dinamo with a penalty, the game had already been won by Perm, with two goals from Sergei Volkov and one apiece from Dmitri Belorukov and Dmitri Makarov.

Rubin Kazan eclipsed Alania Vladikavkaz 4-2.

Andres Scotti's seventh-minute penalty put Rubin ahead, only for Dzhambulad Bazaev to equalise.

Alejandro Dominguez put Rubin back in front, but Bazaev equalised with a penalty of their own with 10 minutes remaining.

But there was still time for substitute Tomas Chizhek and Orlando Calisto to win the match for Rubin.
