Brazil: Santos' Ricardinho negotiates new contract [Sun Sep 18th, 2005]

Santos are pre-empting any European interest to lure key players away from the Vila Belmiro during the December transfer window. Peixe football director Luís Henrique de Menezes revealed that a key part of this strategy is based around renewing Ricardinho, whose current contract expires in December.

“We’re in the preliminary stages at the moment; on the right track but with nothing to declare right now,” he explained to waiting reporters. The player himself, who has been placed in the orbit of mentor Luxemburgo’s Real, was equally vague, “This is the sort of thing dealt with by my agent. What I can tell you is that I’m 100% focused on the Brasileirão”.

Ricardinho has his mind on the title rather than the top scorer trophy, despite leading the Peixe list of goalscorers with 10 to date.

“The most important thing is to do a good job and help Santos win. It’s not my aim to get the golden boot, but to win regardless of which team member scores. It’s logical that scoring is good, but it’s no obsession. Our primary objective is the trophy”.
