Uruguay: Penarol hold Cerro to stalemate [Sun Sep 18th, 2005]

Uruguayan giants Penarol fought out a goalless draw away to Cerro at the intimidating Estadio Luis Troccoli, and continue with the poor form that has plagued their year.

Penarol was lucky not to return from the Cerro pointless after being outplayed by the homeside. Penarol’s goalkeeper Claudio Flores came to Penarol’s rescue once again, making several crucial interventions to save his side from defeat.

Cerro played some exciting attacking football, and an inspired Antonio Boghossian was very unlucky not to have gotten on the scoresheet after several brilliant goalward attempts. The end of the match saw the impressed Cerro fans applaud their team, while the Penarol fans jeered their team off the field.

The draw drops Penarol to sixth position, while Cerro remain third bottom.

At the Estadio Campomar de Juan Lacaze, home side Rocha FC drew 1-1 with Tacuarembo. Luis Magureguy put Rocha ahead in the 33rd minute after drilling in a penalty, while just two minutes into the second period, midfielder Alvaro Melo levelled the score for Tacuarembo.

Deportivo Colonia scored two late goals to overcome Miramar Misiones in an entertaining encounter. Aldo Diaz put Colonia ahead in the 15th minute, while Jonhy Woodly put the away side level just three minutes before the break after a defensive error.

In the 53rd minute Adrian Speranza put the side from Montevideo ahead, but two late goals from Luigi Rodriguez (82m), and Fredy Freire (90m) stole the points for Colonia.

Modest Rentistas moved to top spot, after edging out Paysandu FC 1-0 away from home. Roberto Bobadilla drilled home in the 83rd minute to give the side from the ‘chacra’ a valuable victory.

In Saturday’s final match, Cerrito fought out a dull goalless draw with River Plate. Both sides can blame the terrible condition of the pitch and the strong winds for the stalemate.

Tomorrow, Nacional, who are second, but with one match in hand, face bottom-placed Rampla Juniors at the historic Centenario Stadium. Nacional come from hammering Paysandu 5-0 last weekend and are firm favourites to grab the three points.

Saturday Results: Round 4

Cerro 0-0 Penarol
Rocha FC 1-1 Tacuarembo
Deportivo Colonia 3-2 Miramar Misiones
Paysandu FC 0-1 Rentistas
Cerrito 0-0 River Plate
