Melbourne escape with draw [Sun Sep 18th, 2005]
A late Daniel Allsopp goal has allowed Melbourne Victory to escape with a 1-1 A-League draw against a 10-man Queensland Roar at Suncorp Stadium.
Allsopp scored in the 88th minute after Queensland bravely held a 1-0 lead for 26 minutes in front of 15,444 home fans.
Midfielder Vince Lia pounced on a Roar mistake to cross the ball for the 27-year-old striker to shoot past keeper Tom Willis at close range.
The Brisbane crowd jeered referee Ben Williams off the pitch after being upset by the sending-off of standout midfielder Matt McKay.
The Queenslanders were reduced to 10 men when McKay was red-carded in the 39th minute for a late and clumsy tackle on Steve Pantelidis.
The hard-line decision by Williams came less than 30 seconds after Victory midfielder Richard Kitzbichler hit the right post in the best chance of the first half.
Despite the disadvantage, fiery Roar striker Michael Baird broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute when he put the finishing touches on a beautiful counter-attack.
Australian striker Alex Brosque latched onto a fine through-ball by Karl Dodd before lobbing a short cross over the top of the defence to Baird, who volleyed crisply on his left.
