France: Monaco coach Deschamps offers to step down [Mon Sep 19th, 2005]

Monaco (Reuters) - Monaco coach Didier Deschamps has offered to step down after a 2-0 home defeat by Stade Rennes left his team 15th in the 20-strong Ligue 1, a source close to the club said.

The club declined to make immediate comment.

Deschamps told his players he would no longer train the team, the source said.

The 36-year-old former France captain was appointed Monaco coach in 2001.

The club have had a difficult start to the season, failing to move past the qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and losing four of their first seven league games.
